One of the most rewarding parts of being a family photographer in San Diego is growing with the families I photograph. This session was extra special—years ago, this
amazing client booked one of my very first mini sessions when I launched Etta Renee Photography. To have her return now for a family birthday session felt like a giant warm hug from the universe.
Turning a Setback Into a Story
She came to the beach ready to celebrate her birthday in style—with a husband, kids, and a cake that looked like it belonged on The Great British Bake Off (complete with a crown!). The vibes were perfect. Then, as everyone peeled off their jackets and we got into photo mode, a rogue jacket decided to make itself comfortable... right on top of the cake box.
Fast-forward to cake time: the crown had sunk into the frosting, one side was smushed like it had gone ten rounds in a boxing match, and my sweet client thought the whole thing was ruined. But hey—chaos is kind of my thing. I took a deep breath (and maybe a quick mental prayer), adjusted the angle, removed the crown’s base, and had her hold it just right. The final pics? Chef’s kiss. You’d never know the cake had a rough start.

This session is the perfect example of what real-life photography looks like. Things will happen—kids run wild, cakes collapse, tides come in faster than expected. But when you hire someone who rolls with it (hi, it’s me!), the magic still happens.
